The Yala Nishtgal project engages approximately 500 Palestinian youth and 5 youth volunteer-based NGOs to participate in activities to harness youth volunteerism toward achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Local youth are supported in their efforts to undertake activities in their communities that will make a significant difference in their understanding of the role of volunteerism, as well as improve their lives and environments. Palestinian Vision plays the overall coordination role, with the following youth NGOs participating: Alnayzak for Extracurricular Education, Nawafeth Youth Forum, Future Builders Forum Youth Organization, Youth Without Borders, and Caritas.

Due to the dramatic developments in Palestinian politics during 2006, many volunteer projects and community development initiatives were neglected. In order to reinvigorate the spirit of youth voluntarism, Palestinian Vision organized a series of evening performance events during the holy month of Ramadan. During these events, volunteers organized a variety of artistic performances and contests testing knowledge of Jerusalem, with symbolic prizes awarded to the winners.
These events were generously funded by the United Nations Volunteer Program and the United States Consulate in Jerusalem.
Due to the frequent closures, high levels of unemployment and/or unpaid salaries, and marked increase in poverty and hunger during 2006, Palestinian Vision took action to assist needy families with basic food supplementation. Rice, sugar, tea, oil, and canned goods were distributed by volunteers to 180 poor Palestinian families in Jenin (Serees and Jibon) and Tulkarem (Shoufi, Shokeh) – some of the poorest villages in Palestine, according to a recent study.

Young Artists Project
Initiated in 2003, this project gives youth the opportunity to express their feelings through drawing and mural art. After concentrated training, participants draw murals in UNRWA schools and refugee camps, as well as individual paintings and glass arts . The project aims to develop the Palestinian artistic movement by cultivating young artists’ abilities and bringing art to refugee camps through the murals. Participants summarize the history of refugees through their art and strengthen community networks through the contribution of artists from different organizations.
The first group of 20 young men and women between the ages of 18 and 25 were chosen because they displayed an active interest in the arts and community service. After 120 hours of concentrated training, these young people produced 40 murals in the three refugee camps of the Bethlehem district: Aida, Azza, and Deheishah. To further promote the art of young people and allow more people to experience it, Ru’ya developed a traveling exhibition of the participants’ artwork. Oil and coal paintings and glass arts were exhibited in Jerusalem, Jericho, Bethlehem and Ramallah. At the end of the exhibition, twelve representative works of art by these committed young people were chosen for inclusion in a 2004 calendar.

Through this project, youth receive guidance in enrollment regulations and course selection at Palestinian universities. Ru'ya has observed through its members that young people who reach their last year at school are often not well equipped to make decisions about their education and careers. There is a general lack of knowledge about how to apply to Palestinian universities and the wide range of specializations to choose from. In addition, these decisions are heavily influenced by relatives or friends who do not encourage youth to think for themselves. Thus while youth are oriented to traditional courses like medicine and engineering in high numbers, they are not aware that the high rate of graduates in these fields has also led to a high rate of unemployment.
Injaz aims to provide youth with knowledge about Palestinian universities, as well as training in decision-making skills in order to help students plan their own futures. Activities include: theoretical and practical workshops; visits to employers to give youth a closer look at job opportunities; and publication of a Career Guidance Booklet. More than 300 youth have benefited from this project.
In its fourth year, this program aims to train youth from all over the West Bank as community leaders. The professional training team is composed of 20 youth trainers who provide training in a variety of projects, including: communication, decision-making, working with children, planning, professional leadership, and others. This training is carried out with the cooperation of many organizations and youth centers. Ru’ya has provided training for over 5000 youth and more than 6000 children from 50 different organizations.
Our professional training team designs and implements summer camps for children and youth in cooperation with the local clubs and youth centers. The main goals of summer camps are:
- Filling youth’s free time in a positive and constructive way.
- Encouraging youth to be independent and well organized.
- Teaching youth new skills, knowledge, and experiences.
- Creating a positive atmosphere for participants to gain new friends from different districts.
Four camps have been held in Jerusalem, Salfit, Tulkarem, and Bethlehem with the participation of 250 youth from ages 14 to 18.
Ru’ya ’s voluntary youth information program aims to develop youth’s media skills, as well as help youth identify social, cultural, and academic problems and seek constructive solutions. Our monthly youth newspaper focuses on the Palestinian youth sector and creates a network between youth organizations. We also carry out medial training courses to develop our members’ skills.
This project was initiated following the Israeli military attack on Jenin. As it became apparent that news organizations faced difficulties reaching the camp and focused mainly on the movement of Israeli Forces and death count - without considering the social and humanitarian catastrophe - Ru’ya founded the Youth Information Centre in order to give youth the opportunity to document the truth about the attack and its consequences from a grassroots level. Media professionals trained 20 youth from Jenin in skills such as writing and documentation. The youth also participated in leadership workshops, which helped them deal with their community.
